Program Notes:

Adrift is inspired by the layers and patterns of nature and life. The work is a composite of different musical streams, each of which are comprised of their own recursive phrases, expressing growth and decay, all happening concurrently at different rates to form one unified sonic picture. The work moves in and out of focus, represented by amorphous and definitive rhythmic cells, which reflect both our passive and focused perception of nature. The work also meditates on the duality of nature and life: ebb and flow, growth and decay, tension and release. I was inspired by landscape and the natural world as much as I was by how an individual experiences tension and relief in life, and how we come together for different reasons despite what is going in our individual lives.
